Healthy Deals

November 10, 2011

I like deals anytime that I can get them, I also like to be healthy. I eat healthy and excise regularly. I like to save money also, but some times eating healthy isn’t cheap. Fast food restaurants make it cheap to eat, and vegetables in the stores are more expensive. Some fast food places are having more healthy products but you really have to be careful about what you eat even when they say it is healthy. My trainer at the gym told me about a new company that is selling a coupon book that has many deals from my area that will save me money when I am buying the healthy stuff that I like to eat. It is mycouponriot.com and it offers a coupon book with anywhere from 50 to 90 deals all in my area. They may be in your area too. You should go there now and check them out to see if they are. I know it will save you money and make you a much happier, healthier person.

Heart Healthy Sea Salt

October 24, 2010

Everybody should greatly reduce their sodium intake to protect their health, that’s the advice of medical experts the world over. In the United States, the American Medical Association, the American Heart Association and the US Department of Health are all recommending a low sodium diet.

In Britain, Her Majesty’s government has gone even farther the Food Standards Agency is recommending that the sodium intake of children and infants be limited to six grams. The reason for these recommendations is that medical experts believe a high sodium intake leads to problems like heart disease and high blood pressure.

Many people will think that these recommendations mean that a family should take the salt shaker off the table. Nothing could be further from the truth because salt isn’t the problem, sodium is.

Natural Sea Salt

Contrary to popular belief salt doesn’t have to be high in sodium. Natural sea salt, the kind of salt most people used for the majority of human history; is actually very low in sodium. It is even possible to create natural sea salt that has 70% less sodium than regular table salt.

The reason modern table salt is so high in sodium is that it is not natural sea salt. The salt on most family’s tables and in most foods is mineral salt which is mined directly from the earth. It’s not sea salt so it is very high in sodium which is bad for us.

It is possible to create heart healthy sea salts through patented processes such as those employed by Ocean’s Flavor. Ocean’s Flavor’s salt has less sodium than table salt because they make salt the old fashioned way – by evaporating ocean water they don’t mine it. This enables Ocean’s Flavor to create a line of salt products that have 40% to 68% less sodium than regular table salt.

The Ocean’s Flavor sea salts can be substituted for table salt in any recipe and put on the table in place of regular salt. This means that a family can reduce its sodium intake without sacrificing the taste of salt. A mother can create tasty low sodium dishes that the family will actually want to eat.

To make living a low sodium life style easier on October 15, 2010; Ocean’s Flavor will introduce a Natural Low Sodium Flavored Sea Salt. This low sodium seasoning can replace traditional flavored salts which are high in sodium and make protecting a person or a family’s health even easier.

Staying Healthy on the Road

October 23, 2010

Maintaining health can be challenging when you travel. Whether for work or play, extended travel represents a break in the normal routine. A traveler must commit to making an effort to stay healthy on the road.

Many people have a list of must-see locations or meetings when traveling. By the same token, you should also set health goals when you hit the road. It could be something vague like “get 30 minutes of exercise each day”, but most people achieve better success with specific goals. An example would be “take 3 flights of stairs instead of the elevator”, or doing 20 push-ups and 20 crunches before starting the day.

The easiest way to get moving when you’re away from home is to explore the surrounding area. Avoid holing up in your hotel room and watching television. Instead, step out of the hotel and walk for 15 minutes in one direction. This means you would have to walk for the same amount of time to get back to your hotel, thus fulfilling the goal of getting 30 minutes’ exertion. You might even find something interesting on the way!

A balanced diet is the first thing to go out the window when we travel. Make it a point to consume fresh fruits and vegetables where you can. It’s easy to fall into a routine of eating convenient, but less than healthful street or snack foods in your location. However, it is quite easy to have a few pieces of fruit before each meal.

If fruit isn’t easily available, try to fill up at breakfast, as most hotels provide a buffet that usually includes fruits and greens. Not only will they provide much-needed vitamins and minerals, they can also help stave off constipation, which tends to occur with the stress of traveling.

If you make it a point to have breakfast, then you’re making one of the easiest steps it takes to maintain your health. There is no better way to prepare for a big day than by filling up with a healthful breakfast. You will feel more energetic and less inclined to snack unhealthily as well.

It is an unfortunate fact that travel tends to result in stress buildup. Often, travelers may not notice this until they develop insomnia or an upset stomach. However, this can easily be avoided so that you can enjoy your trip in good health, whatever its purpose.

Four Simple Ways to Maintain Good Health

October 22, 2010

Many people have the perception that bring healthy means condemning themselves to a miserable existence of limited food intake and strenuous exercise. While a lot of people could do well to get more exercise and eat less, you can also stay healthy with a few surprisingly low key and easy steps:

Spice it up – adding spices to your cooking can help improve your health. Cumin is used as a source of iron, and turmeric possesses anti-inflammatory properties. It is also touted to help prevent acne, dermatitis and urinary tract infections.

Don’t bolt your food – there’s a reason we’re always told to chew our food properly. For one thing, the digestion process for complex carbohydrates begins in your mouth, and for another, you swallow less air when you don’t gulp down your food. This means you won’t feel bloated or gassy after a big meal. Indigestion becomes a thing of the past!

Chewing food thoroughly also allows you to fully enjoy the flavor of the food while digestion is more complete thanks to the food being chewed into small pieces. This results in food being digested more quickly, and a person feeling more energetic after eating.

Opt for “sky juice” – everyone knows they’re supposed to drink 8 ounces of water per day; more if physical exertion is involved. However, few people remember why this is so. Water keeps you hydrated, and actually helps you feel more alert. This is because it encourages circulation, which sees more oxygen reaching the brain.

The hydration also helps you look youthful, and encourages the elimination of toxins, which means the body expends less energy on repairing itself. This allows you to feel more energetic, and gives you the boost you need to start exercising.

Walk on – many physicians recommend taking 10,000 steps a day to maintain good health. In fact, walking is a low impact exercise suitable for everyone. The aerobic effects of walking may take longer to manifest than high impact cardiovascular activities, but the end result is the same – an overall feeling of wellbeing, lower blood pressure, less “bad” cholesterol levels and higher “good” cholesterol levels.

There’s nothing wrong with starting off slowly. Most of the time, the key to living a healthier life is persistence and moderation.

Health and the Senior Citizen

October 22, 2010

Getting older is never a walk in the park. The majority of people you and I know would do anything to avoid looking their age, but aging goes deeper than just deteriorating looks. It’s not a crime to look your age, but you would be doing yourself a disservice if you don’t stay healthy in every way you can.

Nobody particularly relishes visiting the doctor at any stage in life. However, regular physical checkups become more important as you approach your twilight years. Many of the ailments that afflict the elderly can actually be caught early in advance if a person makes it a point to visit his or her doctor yearly or twice yearly.

Exercise is another component to staying healthy as a person ages. In fact, our bodies are in a constant state of decline from the time we hit our twenties. Fortunately, this is a condition that can easily be reversed with regular exercise. No one expects a senior citizen to run one marathon a month (although there are those who can and do!) but keeping active helps prevent your knees from giving out forty years down the line.

It is a sad fact that we are able to do less as we age. This means that a person shouldn’t shy away from a challenge, but should always keep his or her limits in mind when attempting anything strenuous. It could involve staying an extra 10 minutes in aerobics class when you shouldn’t, or something more innocuous like taking care of your grandchildren over the weekend when you know very well your knees aren’t up to chasing them around.

It’s also important to stay healthy mentally as well as physically as you get older. Although there is no guarantee against dementia or Alzheimer’s, keeping up with friends and keeping your brain intellectually engaged will help a person stay mentally healthy. After all, maintaining good health is a lifelong commitment.

Adopting Healthier Eating Habits

October 7, 2010

I began to investigate the effects of the food we eat when my father was briefly admitted to hospital due to heart palpitations. We never did find out the cause of his discomfort, but he took it as a sign that he should adopt a healthier approach towards food. For the rest of us, that meant having to snack on something other than potato chips while watching TV.

One of the first things he decided to change about his diet was the kind of seasoning he used. He was the type of person to salt every thing on his plate, even French fries. Since the hospitalization though, we have all noticed him going easier on the regular table salt, and has taken to reading up on the benefits of sea salt.

In fact, he bought a pack of the stuff just recently, which is a big surprise in itself, as he prefers to let mom do all the shopping. I must admit that the appearance of sea salt takes some getting used to, as it is sort of a gray color. Plus, handling it is different from sprinkling regular table salt as it clumps together somewhat.

Mom has been using the new purchase in her cooking of late. Personally, I do not think it makes the food taste “purer”, but I did notice that I do not feel as sluggish as I would after one of our characteristic heavy repasts. I guess there really is something to fine sea salt, as my dad has commented that he feels more energetic as well.
